Pendarren 2020

Thank you to everyone who came to Pendarren this year; to all the dedicated staff and adventurous children!

Thursday 6th February

Our last full day at Pendarren was great.

Group 1 and 2 had a brilliant tour of the Big Pit, before taking part in a very entertaining rendition of the Hokey Cokey in the middle of a canal in thirteen canoes.

Group 3 did a year 6 first and abseiled into a cave, whilst group 5 got soaking wet fitting through impossible gaps in the rock!

Group 4 visited Raglan Castle, but they couldn’t find it in a localised mist so they had a brilliant time at Abergavenny castle instead.

In the evening we danced the night away and played pool before falling to sleep in record time.

Wednesday 5th February

It’s been another great day in Wales. Group 1 and 3 went to Raglan castle and took to the skies on the zip line.

Group 4 and 5 loved the Big Pit and showed expert skills in the canoes, whilst Group 2 faced their fear of spiders, mud and small spaces in the caves.

If that wasn’t enough, in the evening, Alpha and John led an evening of sport, whilst other children relaxed in our cosy common room playing Scrabble, cards and pool!

Tuesday 4th February

The children slept surprisingly well and after an all you can eat, full English breakfast, we left for activities. Group 3 went canoeing in wonderful conditions, before heading to the Big Pit and experiencing what it was like to be a Welsh minor.

Group 2 and 5 visited Raglan Castle and then in the afternoon demonstrated brilliant climbing skills.

Group 1 and 3 spent a memorable day exploring the caves and came back with lots of stories of what they had achieved.

In the evening we were visited by storyteller Daniel Mordon who told us a Welsh folk tale of witches, spells and riddles which we all loved.

Then it was off to bed to make sure we got plenty of sleep ahead of another exciting and busy day of activities!

Monday 3rd February

After a great journey, we arrived at Gilwern and discovered where we would be sleeping. We then went to Pendarren house, had lunch and got kitted out in fashionable trousers, jackets and wellies. We met our instructors before heading off to either climb a mountain or build dens in the woods. It was a fantastic start in lovely, if a little cold, weather.

When we got back, we had a delicious dinner, unpacked, made our beds and got ready for room inspection. A great start with smiles on everyone’s faces and lots of excitement!
