Highgate Primary School is committed to providing an environment where all children are safeguarded and are enabled to tell or communicate if they are being harmed in some way.
Section 175 of the Education Act 2002 places a duty upon all schools to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’ 2010, the ‘London Child Protection Procedures’ 2007, ‘Safeguarding Children in Education’ 2014 and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023, provide a framework for enabling the school to fulfil its statutory duties effectively and efficiently in the best interests of children.
All school staff, volunteers and adults working on site have a statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and must be aware of and fully conversant with the school’s safeguarding policies.
It is neither the role nor responsibility of those working with children in the school to assess, diagnose or investigate whether a child is at risk of or suffering harm or abuse. It is the responsibility of all staff to be aware of the need to report any concerns about a child to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) as a matter of priority, or to one of the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) in their absence.
If any member of the school community has a concern about a child’s wellbeing, speak immediately with a member of the Child Protection team.
In the first instance, this should be the school’s DSL, Emma Judge. In her absence, please speak to one of the Deputy DSLs, William Dean, Headteacher, or Emma Healy, SENCo.

We have a statutory duty to ensure that all our pupils are kept safe from abuse or radicalisation of any form. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility: if, as members of the school community, you feel a pupil may be in any sort of danger, either from their physical surrounding or as the result of the words or actions of another person, please bring this to the attention of a member of staff immediately.
