PE at Highgate Primary School

At Highgate Primary we aim to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport.

All children from Year 1 upwards receive two hours of PE teaching each week. This is supplemented with extended provision through after-school clubs and organised games in the playground. Through the Haringey Sports Partnership, children have the opportunity to compete against other schools in the borough. We also offer intra-school competitions for children in Years 3 upwards, giving all children the opportunity to be involved in competitive sport.

We employ a sports coach to work with teachers and classes, as well as to be the focal point for sport in our school. Teachers have access to ‘GetSet4PE’ planning to support them in delivering a broad and balanced PE curriculum teaching the necessary skills at the appropriate time.

In Years 4, 5 and 6, children participate in swimming lessons with additional top up lessons for Year 6 who do not meet the national requirements in the summer term.

Once a year we hold a sports day over three days where children are given a platform to excel both individually and as a team, cheered on by our school community.

Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best.  We listen to our children’s wants and needs and provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs. We support children to embody the values of celebrating and respecting the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes.

We ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We are proud to have had a number of children represent our school by being selected for Haringey in both local and national competitions.

We strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We promote healthy minds, as well as bodies, and continue to support our children’s well-being.

The school has strong links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need.
