This week children in Year 1 helped plant the school’s new allotment. Lots of vegetables were planted including tomatoes, lettuce, onions, chard and, most exciting of all, runner beans, which will grow up bamboo canes to make some bean dens.

The school recently acquired the new site within the allotments behind Gaskell Road. The plot was overgrown and neglected, but was cleared with help from Robert and his team from Hampstead Heath. A working party of parents and staff levelled and dug over the site to get it ready for the raised beds.

Just before half term a team of Highgate Primary Dads arrived to put together the beds. Large sleepers were locked together to make the bed in the centre of the plot. Dusan made the surrounding beds at school, which were carried over and put in place. These were filled with grit and manure and after many hours digging (and a few burgers) the school allotment was ready for planting.

This is a great addition to our school. Thank you to everyone who has helped get the site for a summer of growing.
